IN YOUR ROOM
In Your Room is the first exhibition in The Image Poet of Urban Corners series.
The work consists of two interconnected paintings. One appears inside the other as a painting within a painting. Together, the two images form a nested structure, like a Chinese box: one room enters another, one story hides inside another, while the people within them are always thinking about leaving.
It is a story about love, loneliness, and drifting through the city.
We enter someone’s room. We enter a relationship. For a moment, we believe we have found a place to stay, yet we find it difficult to place all our feelings in one certain person. Like the tension between lightness and weight in Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being: we long for intimacy, yet we long for freedom; we want to stay, yet we are always preparing to leave.
The room is no longer a stable place.
It becomes a drifting swimming pool.
We float through our own lives, wandering from one person’s room to another.
The exhibition was presented in a very small space. The two paintings were reduced in scale, and everything became cramped: the walls were close, the paintings were close, and people were close to one another. The rooms inside the paintings began to overlap with the physical room of the exhibition. Entering the exhibition became almost like entering someone else’s private space.
This is an exhibition about loneliness.
But when the room becomes small enough, and people stand close enough together—
even loneliness begins to feel crowded.
IN YOUR ROOM
We talk about films and music,
about work and gossip,
but never about the future.
We don’t remember when it began,
and we don’t wonder when it will end.
We both know this isn’t love.
It’s just the same room.
When do we meet?
When do we part?
Silent cigarettes burn through the night.
In the lingering smoke,
we understand without a word.
There is always the illusion of wandering,
changing beds,
cities,
and rooms.
In those moments,
we share everything.
And then,
we face the choices again.
Choosing another beginning.
Choosing to wander
into someone else’s room.
