01. I Held an Exhibition on the Wall of a Half-Demolished House

That day, I came across a house that had been half demolished. The ground was covered with green construction dust cloth. It was almost too perfect.
I couldn’t imagine a more fitting setting for The Drifting Boat.
Everything was broken and exposed: bare concrete and pipes, torn wallpaper, abandoned electrical wires.
It reminded me of the studio I moved into after graduation.
It was in the northeastern corner of Beijing, inside an area completely encircled by railway tracks. Beside the railway was a road. Beside the road was a wall. And on the other side of that wall was my bed.
Whether it was a test train passing by or a freight train loaded with construction debris, with only a wall between us, I could feel every vibration through the ground.
It was like lying forever in the sleeper berth of a train, feeling the wheels rolling over the tracks.
I lived there for nine years.
For me, life never felt like standing still.
I was either on a train, or on a boat.

02. A Color Somewhere Between Blue and Green

Most of the pain in life can be escaped, one way or another. Wandering, in fact, is one way of escaping.
Creativity is useful. If you’re creative enough, you can always invent more ways to escape pain.
Sometimes I even think making art is another form of escape.
Like this color, it’s hard to say whether it is blue or green.
And it’s just as hard to say whether I was trying to escape pain, or trying to create.
In Léon: The Professional, Mathilda asks Léon if life is always this hard.
After thinking for a moment, Léon reluctantly tells her that it is.
It seems like such an ordinary exchange.
Somehow, I was forty years old before I finally understood it.

I’ve always liked the green of construction dust cloth, a color somewhere between blue and green.
To paint that particular shade, pale green with just a touch of lake blue gets pretty close. It has a strange ability to bring ruins and rubble together, instantly making all the disorder feel somehow unified.
When I made this painting, my life looked much the same, broken and full of holes.
I tried everything I could to cover it up. I had long since learned to turn the things that were driving me crazy into jokes, and I became pretty good at pretending I didn’t really care about any of it.
After doing that for long enough, somehow I really stopped caring.

03. An Exhibition Faster Than a Pop-Up

Hang the painting. Shoot it. Shoot it again.
I move like a guerrilla: get in fast, get out fast.
In the end, all that remains on the wall is a single nail.
After the shoot, I edit the footage myself. Turn one artwork into a video. Even if only a thousand people see it, even if it’s only a few hundred, that can still be far more people than would ever walk into a gallery exhibition.
And I have plenty more ideas for exhibitions like this. They just keep coming.
There are still so many places where an exhibition could happen, as long as it isn’t the usual gallery or museum: hang a painting on a big white wall, adjust the spotlights, and make everything look sophisticated.
Everyone does that.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve hated doing things the same way as everyone else. Whenever everyone agrees that something is supposed to be done a certain way, I deliberately want to do the opposite.
Sometimes for no reason other than being different.
And now I’m showing off again.
Look at me.
My exhibitions are completely different.
I’m fucking brilliant.
See?
Being happy can be that simple.

04.Living on the Edges of the City

When I was in college, I lived beyond Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road. After graduation, I moved farther out to the Huantie Art District, beyond the Fifth Ring. My studio today is even farther away, near Songzhuang, beyond the Sixth Ring Road.
Living on the edge of the city requires a certain amount of self-reliance. When you go to the supermarket, you buy enough supplies to last for days. It helps if you can cook. It helps if you can drive. And ideally, you learn not to depend on anyone.
It’s pretty much the same as being an independent artist.
The problem is, there really isn’t anyone or any institution to depend on.
Of course I’d love to spend every day just making art, hand the work over to someone else, and forget about everything that comes after. Someone plans the exhibitions. Someone handles the promotion. Someone figures out how to make money.
But when you’re trying to build a new model for art, it may sound cool as hell, but it also means you’re on your own.
There is no experience you can simply copy.
Everything has to be figured out from scratch.
You’re standing on an empty piece of land, fighting the whole battle alone.
Wow.
I’ve been fighting alone this whole time.
Every time I think about that,
it feels fucking great.
