I. Dancing Alone Beneath the Night Sky
But those experiences never excited me as much as I had imagined. More often, they made me uncomfortable.
Chinese people are not generally known for loving the kind of social occasion where a crowd gathers and everyone desperately searches for something to say to strangers. Among the people I know, I’m probably one of the most outgoing and talkative. But even for me, those occasions felt strange. Everyone seemed to put on a carefully composed version of themselves. Nobody was truly relaxed. The conversations felt more deliberate than ordinary conversation, and much more artificial.
Over time, I became increasingly aware of the pretension and vanity surrounding the art world. Around 2013, I gradually stopped participating in exhibitions altogether. I deliberately distanced myself from the industry and cut off almost all contact with the art scene.
From the most practical point of view, I had come to believe that the people in this world could no longer offer me much information of real value. And between artists, we were ultimately competitors.
We could pretend to admire each other’s work, while behind each other’s backs there was endless petty criticism, personal attacks, and sometimes things far worse.
I saw no reason to pretend to be friends with people I didn’t respect.
I simply wanted to keep my distance.
No matter how close we try to become to other people, loneliness is something none of us can ultimately escape. So I saw no reason to waste my time making friends simply to appear well-connected.
I was perfectly willing to be alone.
Of course, for an artist, there was still one question I could never avoid:
What do I do with the work once it needs to be seen?
Many years ago, when I was still studying at art school, I used to visit exhibitions in Beijing’s 798 Art District with a sense of longing. Vast white walls, carefully positioned spotlights, large paintings hanging quietly in open spaces, silent and solemn. It all seemed deeply attractive to me.
But once you actually enter this world and become an artist yourself, after seeing the same thing over and over again, what once fascinated you can eventually become endlessly tiresome.
After graduation, I rented a studio. Like any inexperienced young artist, I carefully put together my portfolio and asked friends to pass it on to institutions and curators they thought might be interested. I also did what everyone else was doing and took part in a number of exhibitions.
II.We Said Goodbye Here
This time, I brought Spring Dance in the Wild Wind beneath Siyuan Bridge in Beijing.
In the painting, a girl dances alone in the spring wind. The wind scatters the flowers, sending petals everywhere. Above her, the clouds part and stretch in two different directions, like two roads leading to different places.
Many years ago, this was where we said goodbye.
Back then, we probably never imagined that after such an ordinary farewell, two people would keep moving in their separate directions until they eventually arrived at completely different lives. Most goodbyes come without ceremony. There is no slow motion like in the movies, and no one knows whether this will be the last time. You simply say goodbye, turn around, and walk away.
Many years later, I came back.
Only this time, I brought a painting with me.
The wind in the painting is still blowing. The girl is still dancing. The flowers are still scattered across the sky. And those parted clouds still look like two roads.
But we have already gone far away.
So I placed Spring Dance in the Wild Wind beneath Siyuan Bridge, allowing it to reappear in the place where we once parted.
Perhaps this is why I like exhibiting my work this way.
Some works don’t need a beautiful white wall.
They need to return to where the story happened.
Siyuan Bridge is an interesting place. It is not a place meant for staying.
The expressway above is filled with the constant roar of traffic, while beneath the bridge, cars, bicycles, and motorcycles weave past one another. Some people are going to work. Some are going home. Some are making deliveries. Some are simply trying to get somewhere.
Everyone has a direction.
Everyone seems to be in a hurry.
And there I was, standing beneath the bridge with a painting.
Suddenly, I seemed completely out of place.
It made me think of myself many years ago, when we said goodbye here. I think I was much the same back then.
The city around me was always rushing forward, while I always seemed to move a little more slowly. The traffic today has somewhere to go. You had your own direction back then.
Somehow, I was never in quite such a hurry.
Many years later, I came back here, hung a painting beneath the bridge, took photographs, shot some video, and watched the girl in the painting dancing alone in the wind.
The cars above kept roaring past.
The people below kept hurrying on their way.
No one stopped because an exhibition was taking place here.
Standing outside the flow of traffic and looking at Spring Dance in the Wild Wind, I suddenly felt that this painting belonged here far more than it ever could on the white wall of a gallery.
Because many years ago, this was where we took two different roads.
And today, I came back here alone.
While everyone else hurried toward somewhere,
I stood there watching the girl dance alone beneath the night sky.
